Rwanda produced a stunning upset by defeating Nigeria 2-1 in Uyo on Monday, but it was Benin who ultimately clinched the second qualification spot in Group D for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.
A 0-0 draw against Libya in Tripoli was enough for the Squirrels to join group winners Nigeria in Morocco next year, as they edged Rwanda on head-to-head record despite finishing level on points.
Benin Hold Firm in Tripoli
Benin entered the final matchday knowing a draw would suffice if Rwanda failed to overcome Nigeria by a significant margin.
The Squirrels put in a gritty defensive performance at the 11 June Stadium to secure the point they needed.
Libya dominated possession and created several chances, with Ali Yousef Musrati coming closest to scoring late on, but Benin’s backline held firm.
Although Benin struggled offensively, their defensive resilience proved crucial.
The goalless draw ensured they finished level on eight points with Rwanda but secured second place thanks to their superior record in their two head-to-head encounters, which included a crucial 2-1 win earlier in the campaign.
Nigeria's Unbeaten Run Ends
Nigeria, who had already secured their place in Morocco, suffered their first defeat of the qualifiers at the hands of Rwanda in a match that showcased the Amavubi’s determination to stay in contention.
The Super Eagles took the lead in the 59th minute through Samuel Chukwueze, who slotted home a well-placed shot after a clever pass from Frank Onyeka.
Rwanda equalized just 13 minutes later when Ange Mutsinzi headed in Jojea Kwizera’s free-kick delivery.
The visitors completed the comeback in the 75th minute as Innocent Nshuti finished from a tight angle to silence the home crowd at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Nigeria rallied late, with Victor Osimhen and William Troost-Ekong both coming close, but the Amavubi’s defense held firm to claim a historic victory.
Despite their valiant efforts, Rwanda’s earlier results meant they fell short of qualifying.
Benin will join Nigeria in representing Group D at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.
While Nigeria will aim to bounce back from this defeat, Benin will look to build on their resilient displays as they prepare for the continental showpiece.
